SH Comments: Perfect sailing conditions with moderate southwesterly and
autumn cooling noticeable. The Paine twins were guest skippers aboard
Ondine and quickly proved their mettle - they are seasoned J-24 racers.
Art is an artist and marine writer (busy at work on a book about Bill
Stewart's new 154-foot ketch, Sheheherazade). Chuck is a naval
architect. Both men had high praise for the Luders design.

The last leg of the second race considerably juggled the fleet (except
for Ondine who held a comfortably lead.) Mary Jane and Paladin had
difficulty hauling in their spinnakers off Bear Island light and lost
places to other boats. Red Hot, who seemed to be last at that marker,
deftly zoomed to 2nd. Likely the most memorable leg of the race.

The Internationals both were sailed by fine skippers. They did not use
spinnakers. Sydney Roberts Rockefeller reports that she intended to
race Satin Doll, but arrived too late to do anything but watch. We hope
that more IOD's participate next week. They add much to our scenery and
'moment.'.

Fall racing is quite new to Mount Desert. For several years the
Northeast Harbor Fleet has hosted a Columbus Day series for
International One-Designs. Last year the Luders held a fall series - its
first and likely the first, too, for any local class (excepting high
school racing). This effort seems off to a hopeful start and we
anticipate that Weetamoe (#21) and Watermelon (#3) can be brought to the
line in future races this month. God's Pocket (#12) was out sailing,
but its owner is not interested in racing. Two years ago, however, he
did weaken and agree to 'hover' at the start to assist the impression
that Luders were out in larger numbers. In a moment of abandon, he even
sailed the course and finished third. We regret no recent lapses.

All in all, a glorious afternoon for which we are all grateful.

Ginny & Tom Rolfes will host an end-of-season Luders pot-luck at the
"Some View" at the end of the September series - no specific date yet. A
finish carpenter from one of the local boat yards will be on hand to
show some of his half-models of local racing boats. He has obtained
Luders blueprints and will soon begin a Luders half-model.
