SOUTHWEST HARBOR JOY RIDERS TOTAL 27 FOOT LUDERS
A 27 foot Luders sailboat owned by Elliot Cohen was totaled last Friday
night by three joy riders cruising in the water near Gilpatrick's Cove in
Northeast Harbor.
Powered with 145 HSP, a 20 foot Boston Whaler rammed into the port side of
the stern and sank the boat. Only the mast showed above water Saturday
morning.
When the vessel was raised Sunday it was discovered that an 8-foot section
had been taken off the boat, the keel was split and the boat was twisted out
of shape.
Marine Patrol Officer for the Department of Marine Resources, William
Pinkham, said the investigation was concluded Monday. A 17 year old boy was
summoned to appear in court in Bar harbor August 8, for Operating to
Endanger and restitution.
Originally constructed in 1947, the Cohen's Luders was completely rebuilt by
Ralph Stanley less than two weeks ago. The Cohen's are summer residents of
Northeast Harbor and make their winter home in East Brunswick, NJ.

Clipping courtesy of S. Rockefeller who's family had previously owned this
Luders ( ELUDER, Northeast Harbor #15). The boat was subsequently broken up.
The Cohen's later bought another Luders (NEH #27)- this exhibited when new
in the New York Boat Show -it had inlaid teak decks.
This news article was accompanied by a photo of ELUDER as it was raised
above the surface - damage is clear. (The photographer is deceased, by the
way, and the BHT does not keep photos. I checked!)
Someone who had seen the boat reported that it was restorable, but no one
wanted to undertake it. Builder Ralph Stanley is best known for his wooden
Friendship sloops (& received a Presidential award a few years ago.)
