season's first race<SPAN class=312003711-03072004>*</SPAN> will not count due to
confusion about the race course. Half the fleet thought the first marker was off
Great Cranberry Island, the rest believing it to be further out the Western Way.
Weetamoe was first around the former with Ondine a few seconds ahead of Mary
Jane at the latter. In an exciting spinnaker duel the young skipper of Mary Jane
passed Ondine and was in the lead at the time the committee boat approached with
the announcement that the race had been cancelled. At this time the fog was so
thick that no land or other boats were visible. <BR><BR>It was an interesting
tidbit to learn from Jarvis Newman that the original ten fiberglass Bullseyes
built by the Cape Cod Shipbuilding Company were sent to Southwest Harbor. They
were purchased by the late Jim Willis as part of a rental fleet. Though the
Willlis company has long disbanded, some of the original boats still remain in
SWH. Curiously, they were assigned, Newman said, larger racing numbers than
their production would indicate. (Boat companies often inflate sail numbers.) No
glass boat was ever assigned national number 1 though the second on<SPAN
class=609032811-03072004>e built (that is to say, 2nd lowest hull number) is
still in SWH. </SPAN><BR><BR>Though several others Luders were expected at
the line, 6 boats for July's initial race is a good showing. Tom Rolfes, owner
of Paladin, is skippering in the Mount Desert - Digby, Nova Scotia race and
could not be on hand. The May Luders, new this season to our fleet, was due to
participate, but is perhaps delayed at her yard. Sea Biscuit, as mentioned, did
not quite make it from Seal Harbor due to light airs.<BR><BR>The post-race tea
was hosted by Commodore & Mrs...Allan Heyward at their summer home
overlooking the Causeway Club. A lovely time for those who attended. During the
announcements period, Luders racers were urged to participate in the club's
Wednesday races - these often take the form of picnic races. The next one is a
sweetheart race scheduled for this coming week. Two people asked about Luders
for sale and a list of available boats will be distributed next week. Luders
racers are very much welcomed by the SWH Fleet and are urged to attend the
weekly teas. <BR><BR>The SWH Fleet's summer schedule (races and teas) is likely
to appear shortly and is distributed to members on their e-list. </DIV>
