<div>Dear Sturge,</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Well as Larry Weeks has shown us, the Verve Cup and therefore,
the 2005 L-16 Internationals are already set apparently --> Friday,
August 12th through Sunday, August 14th. </div>
<div><br></div>
<div>You know, this is surprisingly similar to correspondence I've
seen in the fleet's archives which I maintain. One of the
reasons that the Maine fleet did not join the L-16 Organization at the
beginning was that they did not want to interrupt their season to come
somewhere like Chicago in the middle of the summer. Maine hosted
the first Nationals, but then did not again participate until last
year. I'm sorry this pattern seems to be continuing. We
will have to try and see if the next time it's in Chicago we could get
club resources (Race Committee, boats, judges, etc.) for June or
September.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Pups sound familiar. I have copy of the History of CYC at
home, I'll have to look it up.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Marshall Field indeed - it was he who gave a million dollars in
1894 to keep a lot of the specimens and artifacts from the Worlds
Columbian Exposition permanently in Chicago. This Field
Columbian Museum then got a new permanent building 20 years later when
Field died and left about 8 million dollars of his fortune for that
purpose! We then became The Field Museum of Natural
History.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Best,</div>
<div>Bill</div>

<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Arial" size="-1"

both regular series racing and three regattas. I can't imagine
anyone leaving during that interval. July would be equally tight as
those two months pretty much comprise our "season." We
race now in June and September, but at considerably reduced numbers.
Most of our members come here summers and any diversion from that
would disrupt their vacation time.</font></blockquote>

<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Arial" size="-1"

leaving then and Tom Rolfes, who represented us in New Orleans earlier
this year has already said that it would be unlikely for him to go to
Chicago in that interval. (Plus he also ocean races during those
months.)</font></blockquote>

<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Arial" size="-1"

They raced at the club prior to 1912. That year new
additions were built for Dark Harbor, Maine and were known
as Dark Harbor 12-footers. Many are still around. A very
pretty 20-foot gaff sloop. There was also a 1930s
marconi-rigged incarnation on Long Island Sound still later.
Bowdoin Bradlee Crowninshield, of Boston, was the designer. I
was curious if any of the boats still existed. The last two fleets
were started by Marshal Field, who I think had some Chicago
connection.</font></blockquote>
