I had queried if someone might be able to identify the crew in the foreground of the picture that I had distributed. Happily, the son of one person in the photo e-mailed today to tell me that it was the winning Chicago Yacht Club team that was pictured. Left to right, the crewmen were skipper Sam Clarke, Joe Dowrie and Max Evans.

Even more wonderful, the son sent photos of the handsome little silver box that was presented to the winners. The inscription read as follows:

BAR HARBOR YACHT CLUB

National Luders 16 Championship

August 13-14, 1947

Samuel M. Clarke, Captain

Alfred D. Dowrie, Jr.

Maxwell S. Evans.

Needless to say, it was wonderful having the photograph more accurately identified. However, discovering the existence of this award was exciting. We are very grateful to the several Chicago people who thoughtfully forwarded my query to the appropriate source and for his prompt reply. Nice indeed!!

This success will prompt further research on these founding races. The photographer is known and his family are believed to have a substantial part of his picture collection in their archives. He is known to have taken a number of early Luders photographs on Mount Desert Island.
