As I am leaving for the day this is the best I can do. For future submissions I will go back to the drawing boards. Several of my contributions to the Luders news-group have been rejected in past months because they contain photographs. This is unfortunate and I urge our e-news czar to reconsider his policy about megabytes (or whatever). Ludersdom needs every little boost it can muster.

An increasingly popular sailing event on Mount Desert Island is the now annual Hospice Regatta. For the first time, the Southwest Harbor Luders fleet was invited to participate. As in past years, the Northeast Harbor International One-Designed competed - counting their regular Saturday race day as an event in the regatta. On Sunday, a special day-long ocean race is held for cruising boats. A lobster bake and dance are included in the festivities as boat rides about the Great Harbor to watch the races.

As the Luders fleet had scheduled two races - one a make-up from an earlier postponed race - both counted as Hospice events. On this day, Friday, July 15th, some 9 Luders showed at the SWH Fleet (yacht club) line. The Tempests and Bullseyes also started, but lacked the imprimatur of a Hospice event. A lovely day it was, clear and sunny, characterized by light northwest winds gently blowing down Somes Sound to the north.

This day's start was held off the southeastern tip of Greening Island. Occasionally, the line is moved north to Norwood's Cove, just west of narrow - and breathtaking - entrance to Somes Sound. Red Hot, formerly a Chicago Luders, made its debut with its new owner, Arthur Davis, of Bar Harbor. David Schoeder, the previous owner, has moved on to the International One-Designs. However, his wooden Luders, an Ohio, import of several years ago, is undergoing rebuilding by Jim Elks and is reported destined for a September launching. This boat has been renamed NORTH, related, perhaps, to his International DAKOTA.

At the post-race tea party, Commodore Towers introduced Lawrence Demilner, new owner of Mississippi #333, who has joined the SWH Luders fleet.

Demilner is also spear-heading the revival of the Frenchmans Bay Luders fleet and keeps another Luders there. The day's race results for the three racing classes was read by the chair of the Race Committee. An official from the Hospice Regatta committee was introduced. Tom Rolfes, MDI Luders vice Fleet Captain, presented a generous check to the Hospice campaign on behalf of the Luders fleet and a generous owner. A small pewter cup was presented to the winning Luders Hospice skipper, Sturgis Haskins. Hospice organizer, Lili Pew, was also on hand. Like all SWH post-race tea parties, the occasion was pleasant and chatty. Volunteers were sort for future after-race tea party hosts and the summer's roster quickly filled. All are held in member's homes.
