THE 2006 MOUNT DESERT ISLAND LUDERS SEASON<br>

Although the size of the Mount Desert Island Luders starting fleet remained
about the same this season (12 active boats), the class made significent
advances during the past year. Though two of last year's boats did not race
this year (one undergoing a complete rebuild), there were two new first time
debutes in the revived fleet. Both were thorough restorations and added
considerably to the competition. In addition, two other distant Luders (one
glass, one wood) were acquired by members, but willl not race until 2007.
Four other Luders were in the water, but did not participate this
year.<br>
<br>
This season saw three Island teenagers as helmsman and one, Wells Bacon,Jr,
winning the July series. There were also three new adult skippers adding even
more vigor to the class.<br>
Your reporters, still loyal L-16 supporters, took a back seat from regular
series racing this summer. Both, however, partook in the 100th season of the
32-foot gaff-rigged Winter Harbor Knockabout class. One (DeMilner) also
crewed in the local International One-Design fleet (the world's largest),
witnessing one blustery day a spectacular collision and double de-masting by
two neighboring IOD's. The other (Haskins) skippered in the Bullseye nationals
- finishing somewhat modestly in midfleet.<br>
<br>
Luders also participated in a number of other events; the Seal Harbor Yacht
Club Regatta, the Southwest Harbor Fleet's Hospice Regatta, the Northeast
Harbor Fleet's annual (81st) Hayward Cup race, the Far Out Ocean Race, and a
specially arranged MDI Luders 60th Anniversary race. While the results will
be published in Part II, it might be noted that the Seal Harbor and Northeast
Harbor regattas were both won by Luders. <br>
<br>
It is significent to note that the Island's largest club, the Northeast Harbor
Fleet, which raced Luders from 1946 into the mid-1970s, invited non-member
Luders owners to participate in their annual Hayward Cup regatta. This is the
first time in 81 years that the members-only rule has been relaxed. It was
similarly pleasing that the Club hosted this year's Luders 60th anniversary
race (aka Old Timers Race) and, further, invited Luders to join their Far Out
(mini) ocean race.<br>
<br>
In all, between the Mount Desert and Frenchman's Bay fleets, there are now 31
Luders in the area. 2007 looms with some optimism for an even better summer and
the likelihood of still larger fleets.<br>
