RE: Maine Luders. A =
Report.

The first Luders race of the season was =
held on July 3rd by the Mount Desert Island Luders fleet. Some six =
boats participated - more were expected, but the wind was reported as =
gusting over 30 knots and not everyone felt comfortable racing under =
these conditions. Four of the six boats this day were new to this =
fleet.. Racing was revived last summer after a hiatus of about 30 =
years. It now numbers 20 boats - though all will not be launched this =
summer.

This secretary, first at the windward =
mark, unfortunately managed to hit it in an especially strong =
gust. Not being wholly aware of the rules, he did a penative 720 =
when only a 360 was required. But, alas, on the second rounding =
his mainsail batten caught in the backstay and yet another was =
required to free it. Fleet Captain Alec Goriansky, in close =
pursuit, also hit the mark, and - unfortunately - followed the example =
of the Secretary and made two circles. While both were, perhaps, =
wanting in seamanship, they more than compensated by a plethora of =
sportsmanship. And circling. William Welles, former Bullseye =
national champion, went on to win. Shortly before the Luders' =
start a junior division Herreshoff Bullseye swamped on the line - adding =
to the frenzy of excitement.

There are several potential L-16 owners =
who are interesting in buying into the class if boats can be =
found. Those who know of a Luders for sale might contact this =
writer for a referral. It appears that four distant Luders are in =
negotiation. The demand exceeds the supply as enthusiasm has drawn =
much local interest.

The sponsoring club, the Southwest =
Harbor Fleet, hosts post-race tea parties after each race. These =
are a popular adjunct to racing and are held in member's homes. =
The next two occasions will be hosted by Luders owners, Tom Rolfes and =
Ann Waldron, both of whom own especially nice waterfront =
homes with dazzling views of Somes Sound and neighboring mountains which =
rise from the water's edge.

The latest Luders to arrive, RED HOT, =
fresh from Texas, was launched a few days ago and is tied up next to =
David Rockefeller, Jr's International One-Design at the Mount Desert =
Yacht Yard floats. (Rockefeller is that class's reining champion.) =
RED HOT is expected to be on the line this Friday.
