<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">Back in the winter of 1945-46, as a =
result of a class of Luders 16-footers being organized in Northeast =
Harbor, four of us in Bar Harbor agreed to buy boats of this type as a =
step toward the revival of interest in racing here. Delayed delivery of =
boats and sails resulting in limited activity during the summer of =
1946,but we did have a taste of home competition on the Sunday after =
Labor Day, when 8 boats of the Northeast Harbor Fleet towed over for a =
morning and an afternoon race on Frenchman's Bay in perfect September =
weather.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">…our fleet now numbers 6 .</FONT>
</P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">In this connection, Luders Marine =
Construction Company, advises that L-16's are available for four-week =
delivery to Bar Harbor.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">In an effort to reduce the cost of =
sailing without jeopardizing any of the safety or enjoyment =
qualifications, Jimmy Ducey has worked out a scheme whereby 26-foot =
boats can be bought at a cost slightly less than $1,000 fully equipped =
with mainsail and jib.</FONT></P>

<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">One of the pleasant events of the =
summer was the visit paid us by the representatives of the L-16 classes =
in Detroit, Chicago, Long Island Sound and Northeast Harbor, in order to =
sail the first official National L-16 Class Regatta which was sponsored =
by the Bar Harbor Yacht Club. Sailing in our boats with their own =
sails, the four visiting teams and one representing Bar Harbor, sailed a =
series of five races …. The final victory of Chicago, =
skippered by Mr. Samuel M. Clarke, was well deserved and left everyone =
hoping for a renewal of the event in another year.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">On August 6th, under the spirited =
sponsorship…. Of Dr.John B. Ells, a race with international flavor =
was sailed between representatives of British and American warships =
anchored at that time in Bar Harbor.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">Our first regular series of races was =
begun in August with our 6 L-16's competing once a week. =
Appropriately enough, the winning boat proved to be =
"Northwind" belonging to Commodore Mino</FONT><FONT =
COLOR="#0000FF" SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">t</FONT><FONT SIZE=2 =
FACE="Arial"> K. Milliken and supervised through most of the season by =
Mrs. Milliken.</FONT></P>

members of the junior sailing class. His son OS, Jr. =
owns #51 today. Of these Luders, only this one and #22 =
remain in BH</FONT><FONT COLOR="#0000FF" SIZE=2 =
FACE="Arial">.</FONT><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">. Bar Harbor =
# 54 (later NEH # 28) is located out of State. BH #56 burned in a fire =
while owned by writer Norman Mailer. The</FONT><FONT COLOR="#0000FF" =
SIZE=2 FACE="Arial"> whereabouts of the other Luders is not =
known.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">In the 1947 Bar Harbor Regatta 17 =
Luders raced. Miss Jane Smith placed last in Chinquapin. Now, =
years later as Jane Zirnkilton, she raced last season in her same =
Luders! (The winner was West Frazier in Woodwind)</FONT></P>
