Sail numbers note: Earlier Luders =
(nos. 1-28) were allotted Northeast Harbor Fleet numbers. New =
additions (2003) are given Mount Desert Island sail numbers beginning =
with # 29. (29 thru 36). The revived racing is under the auspices =
of the Southwest Harbor Fleet (yacht club).

There are, at present, 20 Luders in =
Mount Desert Island waters. A few days ago a distant wooden =
Luders was purchased and will be given # 36. This boat is expected =
to arrive in the coming week and will be put at Jim Elk's boatyard in =
Bar Harbor where it will be restored for a 2004 launching. There are, at =
present, three other Luders at the Elk yard - all due for restoration, =
too.. The owner of another newly acquired wood Luders has had an =
offer accepted on a second boat, this one glass, located in =
New York. His family expects to use both boats. It appears, =
too, that one or two other distant Luders are in negotiation.

The racing turn out has been lower than =
expected. This is due in part to poor weather and a delay in =
outfitting several of the boats. MDI-29, Sea Biscuit, made her =
first appearance at the August lst race yesterday. This boat came =
from Chicago this past winter and is owned by Bill Eacho, of Seal =
Harbor. Fleet Captain Alec Goriansky injured his ankle in Boston a few =
days after the first race and has been unable to participate for an =
interim. Alec was formerly NEH Fleet Captain when that earlier =
fleet ceased racing circa1973. He will host the local fleet's first =
meeting at his summer cottage, Pebble Beach, this morning. The =
occasion is also the birthday of Ann Waldron, owner of the July series =
winner, Ondine.

Besides the Friday race series, several =
regattas are in the offing. The Seal Harbor regatta is on August 5th - =
won last year Alec Goriansky. The cup was initially won by Nelson =
Rockefeller, whose Luders, Golden Arrow, is still owned by his widow, =
Happy Rockefeller. On August 13th a regatta will be held on Little =
Cranberry Isle in a joint effort with the SWH Fleet. The following =
week the Northeast Harbor Fleet (yacht club) will host its annual =
Hayward Cup race for club one-designs. For what is likely the =
first time, non-member Luders will be allowed to enter the event. Other =
Luders events this month will include a Picnic race and a Single-Handed =
race. On the occasion of the season's last race, the Luders fleet =
has been invited aboard a new 150-foot Bruce King yawl. However, =
the August 3rd launching has been delayed and there is some question if =
the new boat will be in the water before September.

On Wednesday, August 20th, Bob =
Walstrom, the Luders Company historian, will give a slide lecture =
at a pot-luck supper at the Southwest Harbor's MDI Community =
Sailing Center's facility - head by Glenn Squires who has been important =
in the Luders revival.
