MDI Luders L16 Owners
Celebrate 60 years of Sailing in Maine
The first batch of 22 new Luders L-16s was shipped to Northeast Harbor in 1946. Since then the graceful 26 foot racing sloops have never lost their favor among Maine sailors.
On August 12 the Northeast Harbor Fleet will host a commemorative Old Timers race in the Great Harbor. Vintage boats will be crewed, in some cases, by vintage sailors who were participants in the early decades of L16 racing on MDI. Others, who have finally retired from spinnaker setting, will watch from observer boats during the Saturday afternoon (1:30pm) race.
On the same afternoon, after the race is completed, a sail-in of some of the most notable L16s maintained on MDI will take place at the new Morris Yachts dock facility in Northeast Harbor. Beautifully kept and restored original mahogany plywood models as well as slightly newer fiberglass hulls will be rafted together at the dock and on display for the interested public.
That evening from 6 to 8 pm the Great Harbor Maritime Museum in Northeast Harbor will host a reception and exhibit of Luders racing trophies, photos, and memorabilia. Another attraction will be a slide show of Bar Harbor Times photographer, Peter Travers', beautiful shots of Luders racing over the past few years. Friends and admirers of the classic L16 are invited to join in these celebrations. Contact person Lawrence DeMilner 422 8207
